What are Trainspotting views on 'What it means to be Scottish?

  • The movie depicts a lot of negativity towards "being Scottish" which is evident in some of the language said by some of the characters in the film; "It's shit being Scottish"
  • We are continuously shown a group of young adults who take part in activities such as Shoplifting - Drugs - Stealing - Getting arrested - Going to court - Drinking; however, throughout the generally have a relaxed attitude towards the above implying that activities such as them are "normal" suggesting that being "Scottish" means the above.
  • At one point the main character has just took a shot of drugs the effect used in the film makes it look like he is laying in his own grave as he sinks into the floor - instead of his friend calling an ambulance he calls a taxi - the taxi dumps his body outside the hospital takes the money and drives off - the doctors calmly take him into the hospital. Once more the calm facial expressions suggest that this kind of stuff happens all the time.
