My Beautiful Laundrette Review:

Overall, I thought the film included a lot of interesting themes throughout e.g. Thatcherism, social classes and homosexuality. From the beginning of the film we understand that the main character Omar and his father are living in the suburbs of London near a busy train track so as an audience we identify that they are of a lower class, and this is possibly due to the effects of Thatcherism.
The film is set in the 1980’s, London is in the “Great Depression” and Margaret Thatcher is in power due to her being a power a lot of people are unemployed including the main character Omar; as a result, we understand how much the renovation of the laundrette means to the success of Omar in terms of money.
Throughout the film we also get an insight into the struggle in identity between Omar and Johnny. Both Omar and Johnny are struggling between heterosexuality and homosexuality, Omar’s father asked his Uncle about him marrying his cousin therefore this indicates how Omar would be going against his father’s want. However, this also been a running problem throughout the movie, Omar’s father was previously a very successful writer therefore; he wants his son to go and get an education as he believes this is the only way to be successful. Due to this Omar again is confused on whether to go with what his father wants or to go in to business with his Uncle which he has evidently been successful in.
Finally, the film is an episodic narrative for that reason each section is like the beginning or a carry on of a story that has been running throughout, this was congusing at times however it did keep you interested in the film as an audience member as you were intrigued to find out the outcome of a storyline.
